Paint brands
Sherwin-Williams, Benjamin Moore, Behr, Valspar and Glidden are among the best-known paint names in the United States, along with specialty brands such as Farrow and Ball. They differ in where they are sold, color libraries and product lines.
Each has strengths. Some are sold through their own stores, some through independent dealers and others through home centers.
The best choice is the product that suits your surface, your color and how the room is used.
If you are choosing between two paints, ask how each performs on your specific surface. Product lines differ, and a good dealer or painter can explain the differences.
Primers and sealers
KILZ and Zinsser are familiar names in primers, especially for stain blocking, bonding and odor control. Primer choice matters as much as the paint on tough surfaces.
Rust-Oleum offers many coatings for metal, cabinets and garage floors.
We choose primer by problem: stain, gloss, bare wood or masonry.
Primers are often more important than people expect. The wrong primer under a good paint can fail, and the right primer can rescue a tough surface.
Stains and wood finishes
Minwax, Varathane, Cabot, Defy, Olympic and Thompson's are well-known names in stains and sealers for interior wood and exterior decks and fences.
Transparency, oil or water base and exposure all affect results.
We explain the trade-offs for your project.
For decks, test stain on a hidden board. Wood species and age change how stain looks, and testing avoids surprises.
Tools and supplies
Purdy, Wooster and Linzer are known for brushes and roller covers. FrogTape and ScotchBlue make painter's tape. Graco, Wagner and Titan make sprayers.
Good tools do not replace prep, but they make a difference in finish quality.
We choose tools by the task.
You do not need professional tools to paint well, but a good brush and the right roller cover make a visible difference.
Drywall brands
USG Sheetrock, National Gypsum, CertainTeed and Georgia-Pacific DensArmor are major names in drywall boards and compounds. TapeTech, Hyde, Marshalltown and Level 5 make professional drywall tools.
Board choice depends on room, code and moisture.
We work with many makers, and we recommend what suits each project.
If your builder specifies a drywall brand or type, we follow it. Specifications often depend on code and the wall assembly.
