Low-VOC and Low-Odor Paint Guide

What VOCs are, how low-VOC and low-odor paints differ and how to paint comfortably around kids, pets and sensitive noses.

VOCs, or volatile organic compounds, are chemicals that evaporate from paint as it dries, and they are a big part of the familiar fresh paint smell. Low-VOC and zero-VOC paints contain fewer of these compounds, and many are also low in odor. Most modern water-based paints fall into these categories, which makes painting indoors much more comfortable than it used to be. Odor and VOC level are not exactly the same thing, so a paint can have a mild smell and still emit some compounds, and tints and additives can add a little.

Comfort depends on more than the paint can. Good ventilation, with open windows and fans, helps any paint dry and clear the air. Planning work in mild weather makes ventilation easier. For nurseries, bedrooms and homes with sensitive residents, we suggest low-odor products, scheduling around the family and giving rooms extra time before moving back in. Some stain-blocking primers and oil-based products still smell strong, and we use them only where they are needed and ventilate carefully. In Nashville, spring and fall make low-odor painting especially pleasant.

Questions

Low-VOC and Low-Odor Paint FAQ

Is zero-VOC paint odorless?

Not always. Tints and additives can add a small amount, and some odor comes from other ingredients.

How long should I ventilate?

Keep air moving while painting and for a few days afterward, especially in bedrooms.

Can you use low-odor primer?

Often yes. For severe stains, stronger primers may be needed and we ventilate carefully.
