Painting brick, stone-look and wood fireplaces and mantels with heat-aware coatings and a clean, updated look.
A fireplace is often the focal point of a living room, and a dated brick surround or yellowed mantel can hold back an otherwise fresh room. Painting a fireplace can change the feel of a space more than almost any other project: white-washed brick, a charcoal surround or a crisp white mantel can make a room look new. The challenge is heat and soot. Areas close to the firebox need heat-rated coatings, and old soot must be cleaned or it will bleed through. A careful approach keeps the paint safe, clean and lasting.
We clean soot and film from the brick or stone, protect floors and furniture, prime with a masonry or stain-blocking primer and apply paint suited to the area. Mantels are sanded, primed and painted with hard enamels; brick can be painted solid, limewashed or color-washed for a softer look; the inside of the firebox gets a heat-rated paint if you want it refreshed. We explain safe use and care, and we recommend gas or wood-specific products as needed.
Soot and smoke stains are cleaned and sealed with a stain-blocking primer so they do not bleed through paint.
Surfaces near the firebox use heat-rated paint, and we follow product directions for clearances.
Solid, limewashed and color-washed finishes give different looks, and we show samples.
Wood mantels are sanded and finished with hard enamel or refinished with stain for a custom look.
